Summer Travel Tips: Make Your Next Trip Worry-Free

You planned and saved up for months for your summer vacation. You can’t wait to spread your wings and explore a new place, or maybe you’re looking forward to relaxing with a book on a remote beach. After the vacation of your dreams, the last thing you expect is to return home, happy and refreshed, only to find your home ransacked by burglars. Follow these tips to keep your home secure while you’re away.

  • Establish a "good neighbor" relationship with your adjacent neighbors.
  • Invest in an alarm system.
  • Post decals visible on windows or perimeter fencing indicating the presence of an alarm system.
  • Remove house keys from on-premise hideaway areas. It’s best to leave keys with a trusted neighbor or a relative who lives close by.
  • Ask a neighbor to pick up your mail and newspapers or call the U.S. Post Office to discontinue your mail service for the time you are away.
  • Install a timer device on indoor lamps.
  • Upgrade outside lights with motion sensors or a timer device.
  • Leave a radio or television on so the house looks and sounds occupied.
  • Trim back overgrown trees and plant life to offer a clear view of the property from the street.
  • Cut back tree branches and secure ladders to remove entry opportunities via upper level decks and windows.
  • Equip any slide glass doors with special locks or track blockers.
  • Reinforce garage doors to prevent unwanted access.
  • If possible, install external doors of solid wood or metal with no window or glass panels near the door locks. (The garage door and the back door is typically the weakest link for unwelcomed entry.)

Don’t let concerns about home security mar your summer vacation. Take the time to protect your home so your next trip is worry-free.
